Holding Back the Years
face etc… medispa is the place to go for beauty treatments in York. The chic, elegant décor and the friendly, professional staff make this a great, central location for a treatment. And now the team have devised a menu of services aimed at the city gent who likes to take care of himself with a bit of male grooming. So I decided to take my very own metrosexual man, Mr. Bang for a bit of pampering.
Jon and I arrived together and were welcomed in to the gorgeous waiting area, where we filled in our pre-treatment consultation and skin assessment forms and were introduced to our therapists. Then off we went on our separate ways.
I was booked for a Crystal Clear Microdermabrasion facial. My therapist Jodie explained the procedure, so I knew exactly what to expect. This was important as this was no ordinary facial.
So what is microdermabrasion?
A method of skin resurfacing whereby the outer layers of the skin are gently exfoliated. A flow of fine crystals with applied vacuum suction results in a very gentle ‘sandblasting’ of the skin, removing dead surface cells and clearing the pores of debris. Regular treatments stimulate collagen production and elastic formulation resulting in firmer and more rejuvenated skin with surface irregularities such as fine lines and acne scars beginning to soften.
Treatment of the whole face takes around 30 minutes with very little discomfort. It feels like a light suction running over your face and neck, not exactly the most relaxing of facials but certainly not painful at all.
After the treatment, a soothing, cooling mask was applied for about 10-15 minutes, during which time I was treated to a relaxing head massage (and even dropped off to sleep for a moment or two). After the mask was peeled off a B5 rehydrating beauty serum and moisturiser were massaged in to my skin then it was time to go. I looked in the mirror expecting to see a lot of redness but was pleasantly surprised to see my face was a fairly normal colour, ever so slightly pink, but super soft, radiant and glowing.
Jodie then lead me back down to reception and while I waited for Jon to reappear, she showed me the take-home versions of the products that had been used on my skin prior to and after the treatment so I can do the right things at home to get the best from my new silk-like skin.
The next day my face was ever so slightly tender and it felt taught and smooth, a little like I had spent a few hours in the sun. I also felt I didn’t need as much make-up as usual and my fine lines actually did look smoother! An added bonus was that a spot that had been annoying me for a couple of days had virtually disappeared. Quite incredible really.
This was my first visit and Jodie had recommended a return visit every couple of months. I can see how microdermabrasion could become addictive, as the impressive results are pretty instant and it can be done in your lunch break, a real plus if like myself you don’t really have time for regular facials. I will definitely be going back.
Now my Husband is not really accustomed to men’s pampering, in fact on his consultation form as we sat in the swanky waiting area before our treatments, when the question came up, “What is your usual grooming routine?” his actual answer was “None. Well I obviously wash!”. So as you can imagine I was quietly amused to see him going off for a facial, that many would consider a relatively girly experience. On his return however, on top of having lovely soft skin, Jon looked relaxed and quite pleased with himself and was even talking about booking another appointment for a few weeks time!
The treatment he had was the Elemis Urban Cleanse Facial. A detoxing, deep cleansing facial that works overtime to eliminate blocked pores, reduce sensitivity and neutralise impurities. I also provides long-lasting protection against pollutants, leaving even the most congested skin looking squeaky clean.
When I asked him about it later he couldn’t exactly put his finger on what it was, maybe even just the way his therapist Steph approached the service, but the whole experience felt like a man’s treatment and at no point did he feel uncomfortable with it. The treatment lasted about an hour and began with, surprisingly an optional foot cleanse and massage. Steph then moved on to the facial itself which consisted of a deep cleanse and tone, a facial massage, an enzyme peel to brighten the skin then an exotic moisture dew mask. While the mask was setting there was a ten minute relaxing head and shoulder massage. The treatment was finished off with an eye serum and men’s moisture boost.
All in all I’d say that our first experience at face etc… has left both Jon and myself wanting more. The men’s treatments are well thought out and delivered in a completely different way to the ladies treatments, the extensive menu of treatments available is amazing and definitely offers something unique to York when it comes to health, beauty and skincare.
