what is medical micro-needling?

Medical micro-needling (also known as dermal rollering) is an increasingly popular, clinically proven form of Collagen Induction Therapy and can be effective in the treatment of a wide range of skin conditions. The procedure is completely safe and works by stimulating the body’s natural regeneration and repair mechanisms, penetrating into the dermis or mid dermis to enhance blood flow and encourage the production of new collagen cells thus enhancing skin tone, texture, plumpness and radiance.

how does the treatment work?

Depending on the area to be treated, your practitioner will use either a manual roller or EDS Dermastamp medical micro-needling device to produce thousands of microscopic needle channels to the skin, approximately 0.1mm in diameter and between 0.1mm and 1.5mm in depth. The tiny punctures close very quickly, with their repair inducing the gradual formation of new collagen around the treatment site in a reaction called collagenesis. The healing process also stimulates rapid growth of the thin layer of cells which line capillaries and blood vessels, in turn creating new capillaries for a better blood supply to the skin. It can take up to 6 weeks before visible signs of regeneration and rejuvenation are seen and the process will continue over the following months, providing you with a natural and long lasting enhancement and smoother, brighter, healthier skin.

The skin is cleansed and an appropriate topical anaesthetic (numbing cream) is applied approximately 30 to 45 minutes prior to the procedure. Once the treatment area is anaesthetised, the micro-needling device is passed back and forth over the skin, creating an even pattern of minute spots of pin prick bleeding. Following the procedure aftercare products are applied to promote healing. Written aftercare advice will be provided along with recommended homecare products to ensure the best possible results are obtained.

what results should I expect?

The number of treatments required will be determined by the practitioner at your initial consultation; however it is normally recommended that your medical micro-needling treatment is approached as a course and consists of a minimum of three sessions. Following the advised course of treatment, fine lines, scarring and stretch marks will appear reduced and you should expect to see enhanced radiance, improved skin tone and texture, and plumper, healthier looking skin. As the treatment stimulates the natural cell turnover, we recommend a 6 weeks gap between treatments. The results after a course of treatment for acne scarring or stretch marks will be permanent. For skin rejuvenation the results will last a minimum of 6 months. The results of a course of medical micro-needling are usually most visible between 1 and 3 months after the final treatment has been completed.

how does the treatment feel?

The skin is numbed prior to treatment with the application of a topical anaesthetic (numbing cream). As the micro-needling procedure begins you will feel very little. As the treatment progresses slight sensitivity may return and you may begin to feel a slight prickling, warming sensation. Your practitioner is aiming to achieve an even pattern of minute spots of pin prick bleeding which indicate that the procedure has been done effectively. The practitioner will continually check your comfort throughout the treatment.

is there any down time?

After the treatment your skin will be warm, red and tingly, several clients have likened the post-procedure sensation to mild sunburn. There can also be some mild swelling which may last up to 2 days. The treated area may become dry and sometimes flaky which can last between 2 and 7 days. After 1-3 weeks the skins texture and tone will show improvement and pigment will also change. After 6 weeks you will notice a reduction in the appearance of lines, wrinkles and scarring

Acne scars are a distant memory thanks to a course of micro-needling. Wish I’d undergone treatment years ago.”
