what is treatment for hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)?

Excessive production of sweat- also known as Hyperhidrosis- usually begins in either childhood or adolescence. Sweating is one of the most important ways in which the body loses heat; however, people with hyperhidrosis produce sweat in amounts far greater than needed to control their temperature. Hyperhidrosis is caused by an over activity of one type of sweat gland, the eccrine gland. Until quite recently treatments for excessive sweating were long-winded with variable results. However thanks to advancing technology it is now possible to treat Hyperhidrosis quickly and effectively using an injectable protein called Botulinum Toxin, commonly known as Botox.

how does the treatment work?

Botulinum Toxin is a powerful protein that can be used safely in minute doses. When small doses of the Toxin are injected into the skin, the actions of the nerves that supply the eccrine glands are blocked and their ability to produce sweat is prevented.

how is the treatment carried out?

Before a patient can be treated for Hyperhidrosis, it is imperative to be seen by a qualified practitioner who will conduct a thorough free, no obligation consultation and ascertain suitability for treatment.

An extremely fine needle is used to inject small amounts of the Toxin in the affected area in approximately 10 to15 places. As the needle is so fine and the volume of toxin injected is very little, most people experience only very mild discomfort.

what results should I expect?

Clinical trials have shown sweat production may be reduced by 83% one week after treatment and sweating reduced by at least half in 95% of patients measured 4 weeks gravimetrically post treatment. The effects of the treatment wear off gradually over a period of several months. Your next treatment can be given when the effects of the first course wear off, which usually happens after 4 -7 months.

how does the treatment feel?

As the needle used to inject the Toxin is ultra-fine, most people experience only very mild discomfort, with many clients reporting hardly feeling the injections at all.

is there any down time?

With Toxin treatment for Hyperhidrosis there is no downtime as such, indeed it is possible to have this treatment in a lunch break and return straight back to work. The Toxin usually takes up to 2 weeks to reach optimum effect, so it’s a gradual process. The risk of side effects is minimal, however as with any injectable treatment some clients may experience mild localised bruising, redness or swelling at the injection site. Thorough cleansing of the skin prior to treatment and careful placement of each of the injections helps us to ensure these risks are as minimal as possible.

I was desperate to find a long-term, effective solution to the excessive sweating that had plagued me for years. I bit the bullet and booked to see a Nurse at face etc… who was so knowledgeable and professional. It’s now 2 months since I had treatment and I haven’t looked back

“Before toxin treatment I had to change clothes several times a day and went through bottles and bottles of antiperspirant. I couldn’t believe how effective the treatment was. It took a long time to get used to not worrying about damp patches under my arms!”
